Rewa Grimsdale will teach raranga harekeke (flax weaving) at the YMCA / Mt Albert Community Centre. Rewa will teach two courses, each lasting 8 sessions and open to all adults in the community.
Raranga harakeke gives a sense of wellbeing, self-sufficiency, togetherness & achievement. Rewa will teach traditional aspects of our history and students will learn to weave kete/bags, as well as techniques for plaits, flowers, piupiu and stars. The area around the YMCA has an abundance of flax, and so once the weather is fine, Rewa will also teach harvesting techniques so that participants can gather their own harakeke.
