This project, ‘backstory’, told the stories of migrants having made New Zealand’s largest city their new home.
“Our project aims to present a new understanding of what belonging means to us,” says Shriya Bhagwat-Chitale, the project creator.
The idea evolved from Bhagwat-Chitale’s own life experience of first moving to London from Mumbai and then to Auckland.
The project captured Auckland as it is today and went beyond diversity as only a statistic.
According to the 2015 World Migration Report from the International Organisation for Migration, Auckland is one of the world's most culturally diverse cities in the world. With 39 per cent of its population born overseas, the city is revealed to be more diverse than Sydney, Los Angeles, London and even New York.
