On Wednesday afternoons clashing irregular rhythms, squealing electronics, and chaotic crooning can be heard wafting across Fowlds Park. It’s the sound of the Māpura Studios Creative Music Program. Facilitated by Stefan Neville, participants create soundscapes & alternate reality classic hits using piles of old keyboards, percussion, ukuleles, effects pedals & anything that can make a noise. The approach is spontaneous and immersive. The group utilises gut instinct expression and natural ability to create an environment where anyone can contribute & any sound can be considered music. There are no such things as wrong notes or mistakes.
The group has a Bandcamp page to share their recordings ( https://mapuramusic.bandcamp.com/ ) & were recently included on a double LP compilation of international experimental music being made by people living with disabilities called We Are The World. This was released by the Paris record label Sonic Protest. This year the group made its live debut concert at The Cupid Bar in Point Chevalier on November 9th.
