Chinese Bonsai (Penjing) Art is a unique part of Chinese tradition. It is popular to display gorgeous seasonal bonsais at home during the Lunar New Year celebration.
Chinese Bonsai (Penjing) artists create artworks based around their hopes for the year, the theme is often based around a well known poem or quote. There are some tree species that are unique to the Chinese New Year celebrations, such as the pine - presenting health, the peach fruit showing long life, the bamboo suggesting prosperity and the peach blossom - romance. Chinese people believe that the bonsais will carry on the blessing for years, decades and generations.
While displaying bonsais for fun, the artist will invite visitors to create poetry, Chinese calligraphy artworks or Chinese brush paintings inspired by the bonsai. All of these artworks are displayed together in order to celebrate a happy lunar new year.
A free workshop was held on Saturday March 27th, run by the New Zealand Chinese Bonsai Society to share the joy and skills of Penjing.
